Metsovo & Zagori

Let us say it plainly: very few people travel all the way to Metsovo and Zagori for a winery. They come for the mountain, the trails, the stone bridges and the villages. A tasting inside the Monastery of Agios Nikolaos is a stop that fits into this route, not a competitor to it. This page exists to help you place it in your plan.

A mountain town of the Pindus, with a tradition in livestock, cheese and tsipouro, and a strong architectural identity in stone and wood. At the heart of its modern history stands the Tositsa Foundation, with the mansion-museum and the Averoff Gallery. The Monastery of Agios Nikolaos itself, where the tasting takes place, is the oldest monastery of the region.

A few kilometres to the north stretch the Zagorochoria, a cluster of stone villages with arched bridges, cobblestones and trails. The Zagori Cultural Landscape was inscribed in 2023 on the UNESCO World Heritage List, the first Greek cultural landscape on the list. Within this landscape lie the vineyards of the Monastery of Votsas. From Metsovo, the Eastern Villages of Zagori are about 40 kilometres away.

The same mountain range that gives its name to one of our labels, Valia Calda, is here: one of the wildest and most protected areas of the country, within the North Pindus National Park. Forests of beech and black pine, rivers and summits, for those who want to combine the visit with hiking and nature.
